Gene Ford San Francisco, CA (November 19, 2004)……… On Friday December 3, at the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco, Gene Ford, author of the best selling Science of Healthy Drinking, and The French Paradox, moderates a panel of 8 celebrated dual-practitioners: medical doctor/winemakers; discussing the intriguing intersection of medicine and winemaking, the current science and issues surrounding wine’s healthfulness and the cultural and political forces that complicate them. Following the discussion, there will be a tasting of “doctor made” wines, including those of the panelists.

The panelists are: Dr. F. Wells Shoemaker: Pediatrician and owner of Salamandre Wine Cellars, Aptos; Dr. Thomas Fogarty: professor of surgery at Stanford University Medical Center, and owner of Thomas Fogarty Winery, Santa Cruz; Dr. Philip Norrie: Family Practitioner and owner of Pendarves Estate, Hunter Valley, Australia; Dr. Ellen Mack: Neurologist and co-owner of Russian Hill Winery, Russian River Valley; Dr. Donald Olson: Neurologist and owner of Torri Mor Winery, Willamette Valley, Oregon; Dr. Joseph Gunselman: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and owner of Robert Karl Cellars, Columbia Valley, WA; Dr. Charles Thomas: ObGyn, owner Chateau Thomas Winery, Plainsville Indiana; and Dr. Alfred deLorimier: Pediatric surgeon and owner deLorimier Winery.

With over 38 wineries in the United States owned by medical doctors, this forum will also present written testimony and opinion from dozens of additional M.D.-Winemakers on the health and longevity issues relating to wine. Although there have been multiple lectures and symposiums on the benefits of moderate wine consumption presented in the last decade, this is the first that offers exclusively the findings and opinions of M.D.-Winemakers.

In his 5 books on drinking and health, Gene Ford presents the merits of hundreds of scientific studies conducted around the world that find health benefits in moderate consumption, and explores the social and political ramifications of America’s long standing aversion to drinking.
